Ceremonial county
Devon
The largest of the seven areas in this directory: two cities, two coasts, and a long list of market towns that do not share one high street.
Devon is a ceremonial county. Exeter is the county town and the service centre for the east. Plymouth is the larger urban economy, with a dockyard and a marine industry that still shape the jobs in the city. Torbay, listed here through Torquay, is a visitor coast. Northern Devon, listed here through Barnstaple, serves a wide rural area and the surf coast around it.
Those four places are a poor match for a single search. A plumber in Exeter is not a plumber in north Devon, and a summer café in Torquay is a different business from a year-round workshop in Plymouth. Use the town pages. The county page is the map, not the shortlist.
This launch lists Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay and Barnstaple. Other Devon towns, including places on the south coast such as Kingsbridge, are not town pages yet. A business there can still be added. It will not appear under a town until that town exists.
- Use a town when you know where the work is. County results mix four different markets.
- Coastal listings get more seasonal as you leave the two cities. Ask about winter hours.
- Plymouth and Exeter are far enough apart that a same-day call-out is a question, not an assumption.
