Ceremonial county
Dorset
A rural county with one large coastal conurbation. Bournemouth and Poole are listed apart because the harbour splits the way people move.
Dorset is a ceremonial county. Most of the urban population is in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council area. This directory lists Bournemouth and Poole as separate towns. They share a council and a labour market, and they are still awkward to cross at the wrong time of day because Poole Harbour sits between the centres.
Weymouth is the other town in this launch: a smaller coastal town and a service point for the west of the county. Dorchester, the county town, is not a page yet. Rural Dorset and the Isle of Purbeck are not pages either.
Christchurch is inside the same council area as Bournemouth and Poole and does not have its own town page. A business there should say Christchurch in the address rather than hoping a Bournemouth search is precise enough.
- Say Bournemouth or Poole. 'The conurbation' is not a place anyone travels to.
- Weymouth is not a suburb of Bournemouth. Ask about travel if the job is there.
- Seasonal guest houses and year-round trades sit in the same county and should not be read as the same sort of listing.
