Ceremonial county
Gloucestershire
Cheltenham and Gloucester are neighbours. They still deserve different pages.
Gloucestershire is a ceremonial county. Gloucester is the cathedral city, with the docks and a broad base of trades. Cheltenham is a Regency spa town a short way up the road, with festivals, a strong independent high street and a professional-services habit. People commute between them. A directory should still not treat a Promenade accountant and a docks builder as the same search.
The Cotswold villages are not separate town pages. South Gloucestershire, along the Bristol edge, is not this hub either. A GL postcode is mostly this county, with awkward edges. The Companies House import records that uncertainty instead of forcing every GL address into Gloucester.
This launch lists Cheltenham and Gloucester only. Stroud, Cirencester and the Forest of Dean can be added as towns later without changing the county page's job, which is to explain the split.
- Say which town. 'Near Cheltenham' is how the wrong shortlist starts.
- Festival weeks change Cheltenham's hotels and restaurants. They do not change a joiner's workshop.
- The docks in Gloucester are a place to visit and a place where businesses have addresses. Read which one a listing is.
